Getting around Italy
Bus and Metro: Rome, Milan, Naples and Turin have extensive metros with smaller metros in Genoa and Catania. The Minimetrò in Perugia connects the train station with the city centre. In all cities and towns there are sufficient urban and suburban bus systems with services limited on Sundays and holidays. Purchase your tickets at tobacconist shops, newsstands, ticket booths or dispensing machines at bus and metro stations.

Taxis can be booked by phone or taken from taxi ranks found outside most bus and train stations. Take note when booking by phone, the meter starts running from the time you call as opposed to when you’re actually picked up.

Train travel is relatively inexpensive and convenient. Trenitalia the national train system runs most services while the Italo, a privately owned service operates high-velocity trains on two lines, between Salerno and Turin and Venice. There’s the Intercity (IC) train system between major cities and the Alta Velocità (AV), a modern, high-speed train and many others with speeds of up to 300km per hour connecting major cities. The latter being costlier than the Intercity but cutting travelling time by almost half. The majority of trains offer 1st, 2nd or 3rd class travel.

Travelling in a rental vehicle presents an extensive network of motorways, state highways, regional highways, provincial highways and Strade locali which are often not tarred or mapped. Petrol prices vary between service stations and spare parts are available at many garages.

Throughout Italy, motorbikes and Vespa’s can be rented from agencies.
