Canadian Climate
Temperatures vary across Canada according to locations. In many regions winters can be extremely harsh especially in the interior and Prairie provinces. Daily temperatures average around -15°C sometimes dropping to -40°C with relentless wind chills. In non-coastal regions the ground is sometimes covered by snow for up to six months of the year. Along British Columbia’s coast a temperate climate is enjoyed with a mild and wet winter. The east and west coasts generally average temperatures in the 20s while between the coasts, average summer highs range from 25 to 30°C with unusual heat in certain locations reaching above 40°C.

When to Fly to Canada
As seasons vary throughout Canada its dependent on why and what you want to do.
Peak
For winter sport lovers and the best snow, the ideal time is November to March while visitors wanting to be outdoors exploring lakes, parks or British Columbia beaches, late May to early September affords idyllic weather.
Low
November to February shouldn’t be considered if you’re not keen on any activity involving snow.

For  cheap flights to Canada it’s best to fly on a Tuesday, returning on a Friday, while flying internationally out of Canada, Thursday flights are less expensive. Accommodation rates vary from city to city but on average you’ll pay about 30 CAD to stay in a hostel and around 65 CAD in a budget hotel.

Getting Around Canada

Visitors can utilise bicycles with many cities having hundreds of dedicated cycle lanes and plenty of rental shops to hire bicycles.

For a quick trip out or to get back to your hotel, metered taxis can be flagged down or ordered telephonically and you can on occasion, agree to a flat rate with the driver before starting your trip. Most cities have at least three different taxi companies in operation.

Ideally, in such a large country, the best way to travel is to rent a cheap vehicle from one of many reputable companies such as Avis, Hertz, Budget, Alamo or Thrifty.

The national bus network in Canada is extensive with numerous large and small bus and coach operators existing. Bus companies such as Greyhound or Red Arrow that afford long-haul travel across the country are decent, but not that comfortable.

The national rail service is operated by VIA Rail that runs from the easternmost to the westernmost coasts with prices varying on the time of year you’re travelling and the length. Bear in mind a train ride from Toronto to Vancouver normally takes around 3 days and 3 nights over a distance of 4,500km.

In the southern part of Ontario GO train is mostly used with connections to many cities around the Greater Toronto Area and is separate from the Toronto Transit Commission that covers the entire city of Toronto using a subway and bus network.

If you’re travelling between provinces your last option is to fly, as this can be costly with the country having only two major airlines, WestJet and Air Canada.
