May starts with average temperatures of 23°C that climb steadily to around 30°C during August and then begin dropping in September from 26°C to 13°C in January. February has temperatures lifting again from 14°C to 17°C in April with the most rainfall.
When to fly to Barcelona
For the best weather, fly to Barcelona anytime between May and the end of July. But be prepared for crowds and high prices with peak season from March to August. September is pleasant but August, hot and humid. Barcelona’s winter months and low season from November to February afford more availability with cheap flights to Barcelona during January and February.
Getting around Barcelona
The city has an extensive public transport network comprising subway trains, buses, trams and local commuter rail, known as rodalie’s.
Driving yourself in Barcelona with congested traffic and parking hard to find isn’t worth the stress but if you have to rent a vehicle, Avis and Hertz have downtown and airport offices operating from 08h00 to 21h00 Monday to Friday, Saturdays from 08h00 to 20h00 and Sundays from 08h00 to 13h00.
The Metro subway has six main lines that crisscross the city efficiently and frequently and entrances marked with a red diamond. The main station is Plaça de Catalunya with services operating Sundays to Thursday from 05h00 to midnight and Fridays and Saturdays 05h00 to 02h00.
Bus lines traversing the city comprise around 190 with most running every day from 05h30 to 22h00 and some night buses travelling along main routes from 23h00 to 04h00. Day buses are red, night buses are yellow and tickets are purchased when boarding. Taking a bus during peak hour should be avoided. Ideal for tourists is the Barcelona Bus Turistic, a double-decker bus that gets you to virtually every attraction throughout the city, with a running commentary in 10 languages and choice of indoor or outdoor seating.
Taxis are yellow and black with the letters sp on their fronts and rears and are free for pick-ups when the libre sign is displayed in the window and their rooftop green light is on. Meter rates start at 2€ with each additional kilometre costing 1€. You may pay an extra 1€ for your large suitcase going into the trunk while trips to the airport have an additional charge of 3.10€.
The Funicular de Tibidabo is the public transport provider for visiting the Tibidabo or Montjuïc mountains, operating every 15 to 20 minutes and costing 7.70€. The service runs daily 10h00 to 20h00 from mid-April to September while during off season it usually operates only on Saturdays and Sundays from 10h00 to 18h00.
- Visit the formidable but beautiful 16th century hilltop Montjuïc Castle once a military fortress and prison and then stroll through the 57 acre Montjuïc Cemetery, founded in 1883 and rich with funerary art. Not to be missed after sundown is the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc, splashing out synchronized streams of bright colours.

- The Santa Maria del Pi, besides its large rose and beautiful stained glass windows is home to four large giants, encased in glass from floor to ceiling that were temporarily retired in 1780 by King Charles III, but returned to life in 1799 for the feast of Corpus Christi.
